Sometimes, getting swimmers to focus on one thing, helps you improve something else.
Why do it:
Making sure the athlete becomes aware of turbulence in places they may not realize, can potentially make them better swimmers.
Remember, this is an awareness and teaching exercise for developing swimmers. The faster the tempo, the more wake will be created, but the time it's impacting the swimmer's progress will be much less. It's the ABILITY to do this we're going for.
How to do it:
1 - Video tape your swimmer, and show them the turbulence and wake that's created by staying just a bit too high during their training.
2 - Encourage them to feel the drag of the surface with the hips, and continue to go just a bitter deeper to escape the connection of the surface.
3 - The hips should be drawn in FRONT of the wake, or passed it to set up the kick.
How to do it really well (the fine points):
Don't let the swimmers "cheat" this by just going deeper, this is a search for the ideal depth for each swimmer. Just deep enough to get the hips in front of the wake while drawing them forward, but not so deep that the athlete is heading DOWN.
Keep the line forward and parallel to the surface of the water.
PS
I like to get the swimmers to think of the surface as turbulence Velcro! Keep it clean, and escape the wake!
