Almond Eye a mare by Lord Kanaloa cemented her place among the Japanese horse racing greats, charging home to win the 2020 Japan Cup.
The record breaker retires having won a record nine Grade 1 Turf contests, and the highest earning Japanese horse in history - surpassing Kitasan Black's prize money haul of 1,876,843,000 yen.
Rider Christophe Lemaire had Almond Eye in a prominent position throughout the race at Tokyo Racecourse, with the front-running Kiseki tiring, and the 2018 winner holding off rivals Contrail and Daring Tact.
Almond Eye becomes only the second horse to win two Japan Cups, joining 2012 and 2013 heroine Gentildonna; the success is a third for Lemaire who also partnered Vodka in 2009, and second for trainer Sakae Kunieda.
For Lemaire, a move to Japan was necessary and yet logical. He spent about 15 years riding in Japan during the winter, when major European tracks were on hiatus, and enjoyed a good measure of success in those trips, such as in 2005, when he rode Heart’s Cry to an upset win over Deep Impact in the Arima Kinen or 2009 when he won the Japan Cup with two-time Japanese Horse of the Year Vodka.
The jockey has claimed many big prizes around the world, including wins at Royal Ascot, Breeders’ Cup, the Dubai World Cup Carnival, the Hong Kong Cup, a Melbourne Cup and many Group 1 wins in his native France.
