Haas heads to Dutch seaside circuit Zandvoort with recent miles under its belt - care of its second-annual pre-summer TPC test at iconic Japanese venue Fuji Speedway, two hours from Tokyo. The two-day test at the legendary circuit saw Haas run two top local drivers in Sho Tsuboi, and F1 debutant Nirei Fukuzumi, both of whom are currently driving in Super Formula and SuperGT GT500. And for Fukuzumi, who finished third in GP3-now F3 in 2017, getting his shot in an F1 car was not lost on him. For Tsuboi, a Super Formula and multiple GT500 champion, a second F1 test on home soil gave him more time to dial into the car. And he relished the chance to do it in front of fans.
You only need to listen to Stefano Domenicali, F1’s president and CEO, who spoke after Japan about the optimism in the system. And the thirst for new races is unquenchable. This season, Spanish capital Madrid makes its return to F1 after 45 years, with its purpose-built MADRING track set around the IFEMA conference and convention centre. Next season, Portugal returns at the stunning Portimão circuit, along with Türkiye at fan-favourite track Istanbul Park.
Cadillac F1 CEO Dan Towriss stated that a transition to a new leader had been part of the original plans, but the sudden change ensured a winning approach to development and owner-aligned ambitions. Budkowski, formerly with Alpine and Renault, after he left the FIA, was a signing so recent that he had yet to visit the squad’s factory.
The 1982 Driver Strike | Autosport Retro

Autosport Editor-in-Chief Kevin Turner sits down with renowned motorsport writer Maurice Hamilton to revisit one of Formula 1’s most extraordinary flashpoints – the drivers’ strike at the 1982 South African Grand Prix. As tensions simmered between the drivers and the FIA, the introduction of controversial superlicence terms by president Jean-Marie Balestre prompted a united response from the grid. Led by Niki Lauda, the drivers took a stand that would see them barricade themselves in protest, exposing deep fractures in the sport’s governance and a breakdown in communication that defined the standoff. Hamilton and Turner explore how the dispute unfolded, the hastily brokered agreement that followed, and why confusion lingered over what had actually been resolved. The episode also reflects on the wider context of a tumultuous 1982 season, one overshadowed by tragedy. The deaths of Gilles Villeneuve and Riccardo Paletti, along with the career-ending injuries sustained by Didier Pironi, underscored the dangers of the era and left an indelible mark on Formula 1 history.

Oscar Piastri was second at Suzuka for the McLaren squad’s first podium for 2026, before a double podium in Miami. But it’d have to wait until Barcelona for the next, despite a two-part major upgrade in America and Canada. McLaren didn’t let that dampen its 1000th Grand Prix celebrations, which it kicked-off one race early in Miami, not Monaco, where the papaya outfit put on a breathtaking array of iconic F1 cars. McLaren will be looking to nab another race win at outliers like Singapore, where the playing field is levelled and it’s more about driver skill.

Alex Albon has nailed his colours to Williams’ mast, win or lose, with the Brit not just holding the record for most F1 starts at Grove, but seeking a new deal extension with the former British powerhouse. Albon, who joined Williams from 2022, with 2026 his fifth season there, is keeping faith in the team; despite its fall from grace this season; recent development switchover, and title target blowout to 2030. But the Anglo-Thai driver knows that the real work in the team’s fightback will be done away from the cameras, as he spoke about during his recent promotional trip to South Africa.

Ex-F1 driver Kazuki Nakajima says his move from race car to boardroom felt quite natural, in using his expertise to develop the next generation as vice-chairman of Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe. Nakajima, the son of ex-F1 racer Satoru Nakajima, notched 36 starts for Williams from 2007 to 2009, and moved into the new role after he retired from racing altogether in 2021. Nakajima now guides Toyota’s World Endurance Championship assault, along with other initiatives like Haas’ TPC program in F1, the most recent of which was held last month at Fuji Speedway.
