During the 1960s, the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball started giving out No. 18 to the ace of the pitching staff.

This influenced many Japanese-born pitchers to wear the number in MLB, including rookies Shota Imanaga and Yoshinobu Yamamoto!
