In the third episode of “The Conversation,” hosted by Alexis Nunes and Shaka Hislop as part of The Undefeated’s “Black History Always” initiative during the month of February, ESPN FC’s Nunes and Hislop are joined by 2019 MLS Works Community MVP Steven Levy-Cruz, the president of Academia de Futbol Juvenil Amatense. AJFA is an organization that collects new and gently-used soccer equipment to establish cost-free soccer academies throughout the Americas as a vehicle for social change. Levy-Cruz discusses:
(2:38) The disparities among races and cultures
(3:24) How his upbringing around soccer helped shape his desire to help others
(4:40) The parallels of races being segmented throughout the world in “an effort to divide us”
(7:23) How colonialism impacts the world
(8:48) Shaka describes playing with players from all different backgrounds during his time with Newcastle United, West Ham United and Portsmouth in the Premier League
(9:31) Shaka speaks to the duality of how he was perceived during a horrible incident in his career
(13:24) Why Steven’s non-profit is focused around football
(16:34) How can we help be part of the solution?
