Williams has hauled itself off the bottom of the F1 pile, but has a long way to go even to become a regular points scorer.
And that’s the first big step it needs to take if it’s ever to hope to get back to winning ways. That’s because over the years its technical capabilities and facilities have fallen behind those of its rivals.
Team principal James Vowles says that “20 years of underinvestment is why we are where we are today”. That’s why even under the new ownership of Dorilton Capital, which took over the team in 2020, it’s going to take a long time to recover.
But the rebuild is well under way. So where is Williams now, what are its weaknesses compared to the rest and why might the cost cap regulations hinder its recovery?
