Renault bit the bullet ahead of Austin, with confirmation it would cancel its works power unit program from 2026: paving the way for its sports brand Alpine to become a Mercedes customer squad.

The move, designed to slash costs and boost Alpine’s performance, was championed by its executive advisor Flavio Briatore - with Renault’s Viry-Châtillon engine plant set to reset its focus onto a future Alpine supercar, hybrid technologies and its other racing programs.
