In 1973, renowned tennis hustler and long-ago men’s number one Bobby Riggs, 55, had already beaten then-women’s number one Margaret Court when he challenged Billie Jean King, 29, to a match. In a momentous feminist rebuke to Riggs and his fellow male chauvinists everywhere, King routed him in the “Battle of the Sexes” at the Houston Astrodome before an international TV audience.  A decade ago, investigative reporter Don Van Natta probed intriguing new evidence that Riggs, an inveterate gambler who associated with mob figures, might have thrown the match.  For the 50th anniversary of King’s celebrated 9/20/73 triumph, ESPN reprises its report, which provoked controversy, acclaim and anger.
