The role of a stand-in Formula 1 driver can be a thankless task. In modern times, it almost certainly means being thrown into a grand prix weekend without any testing in the car you're about to drive, and very little time to get your head around the complicated systems that go into operating an F1 car. Some drivers come out of it well - like Nico Hulkenberg's second appearance with Racing Point in 2020 - but here we are focusing on the ones that didn't go well, even if it wasn't the driver's fault.
