Affectionately known as 'The Goondiwindi Grey', equine hero Gunsynd is a much-loved figure of Australian horse racing.

He began his racing career in Queensland, Australia with trainer Bill Wehlow before shifting to Tommy Smith's (Gai Waterhouse's father) yard at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.

With his owners hailing from Goondiwindi, this loveable grey racehorse was dubbed 'The Goondiwindi Grey'.

One of the great milers of his time, Gunsynd conquered Australia's four greatest mile races in the one season, winning The Doncaster, The Epsom, The George Adams and the Toorak Handicap.

Gai Waterhouse described Gunsynd as 'a real show off'. He had a way with the crowd and would often pose for photos and bow to his audience in return for admiration.

Gunsynd ran in three Cox Plates, ultimately winning the 1972 edition, while he carried 60.5kg in the 1972 Melbourne Cup, where he finished an admirable third behind Piping Lane.

Gunsynd's regular jockey Roy Higgins remembers his equine friend:
"I've always said Light Fingers was my favourite horse but Gunsynd was the most fun."
