Are horse racing's golden couple Hollie Doyle and Tom Marquand the best jockeys riding thoroughbreds in Britain?
Tom Marquand and Hollie Doyle, boyfriend and girlfriend since their pony racing days, rode four of the six winners on British Champions Day at Ascot Racecourse while jockeys more familiar with the limelight such as Frankie Dettori, struggled for attention. “Fairy tale,” was Marquand’s verdict. “Things are going so well, it’s a bit ridiculous.”
While 2020 has been a dismal year for almost everyone, they pair have busily built up their careers and gathered admirers.
Marquand made a strong start in the Spring, raiding major Australian Group 1 races the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Ranvet Stakes on Addeybb - his winning mount in the Champion Stakes at Ascot.
Breaking her own record for the number of winners ridden by a British woman in a year, riding a historic double on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot, becoming the first woman to ride five winners on the same card and claiming a first victory at Royal Ascot, Doyle was also named Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year for 2020.
Enjoying her first ever Royal Ascot winner aboard Scarlet Dragon in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes, Doyle joined the roll of honour with Gay Kelleway and Hayley Turner as only the third woman to win at the meeting.
A first Group 1 winner on Glen Shiel came in the British Champions Sprint via a thrilling photo finish beating champion jockeys such as Ryan Moore, Oisin Murphy and William Buick, as well as taking the QIPCO Long Distance Cup on Trueshan.
Doyle also rode at the 2020 Breeders’ Cup World Championships in Keeneland, on hand to see Bob Baffert’s Authentic claim the Classic and the pair join a line up that includes Ryan Moore, William Buick, Pierre-Charles Boudot, Mickael Barzalona and Hong Kong champions Zac Purton and Joao Moreira in the Hong Kong Jockey Club International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) at Happy Valley on 9 December.
