The new Rockstar Energy Open brought together the next generation of skateboarders and celebrated skateboarding culture in Downtown Portland, Oregon, and we were there to take you behind the scenes and get a sense for this inaugural event.
The contest was from August 23-25, 2024. Portland’s deep roots within the skateboarding community serve as a prime location to celebrate the newly minted Rockstar Energy Open, bringing street and park competitions, live music, art installations, and more to the historic Waterfront Park in the heart of the city. We sat down with a couple of our favorite X Games athletes to talk to them about the contest, the other skaters competing, and plans to compete at X Games Chiba 2024!
The Rockstar Energy Open invited over 100 top-tier and up-and-coming street and park skateboarders on imaginative courses, built by California Skateparks, purpose-built for one goal: to display the world’s best skateboarding. Leading up to the event, street skateboarders worldwide will have the opportunity to compete with invited pros through an innovative Video Qualifying Series (VQS) hosted on ThePlatfrm.com, offering a true open invitation format. From that format, we were able to see Jake Ilardi, (a skater who qualified through the VQS) skate alongside skateboarding legends like Chris Joslin and Dashawn Jordan in the finals. It was truly a core invitational format that we and the city of Portland were eager to celebrate with the athletes competing.
