Modern F1 teams are always super-prepared for a new season, even in a year like 2022 where the cars are designed to brand new rules. But there was one element that proved very difficult to simulate ahead of the cars running on the track for real. 
The problem is known as porpoising. And it is a phenomenon that was a problem during F1’s last ground effect era in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At its worst, it can result in damage to the floor and give the drivers a big headache.
Some teams have struggled with porpoising and its variants during pre-season testing in Barcelona. So what exactly is causing it, why is it so hard to detect and how can teams solve their problems?
