Formula 1 teams are keeping their 2020 cars for the 2021 season, as part of the measures put in place to delay new rules until 2022. They'll be allowed to spend a certain amount of 'tokens' on car development, but McLaren will be forced to spend some of its allocation on its Mercedes engine switch for next year. Not only will the team have to prove that any changes it makes to the rear of its car are only to facilitate the Mercedes engine and not for performance, but the tokens it has to use up then can't be spent on developments for other parts of the car. These rules mean McLaren's march up the order in F1 might be slowed over the next two seasons, but the aim is to make the biggest step for 2022 anyway. Will it work?
