Bielefeld fans have had to wait for over a decade, but on last Saturday they were finally rewarded by Joan Simun Edmundsson with his winner against FC Köln. It was the first Bundesliga goal and win for Arminia in eleven years. But that’s not all, because the goal was historic for other reasons. As the scorer of the winning goal Edmundsson is the very first Bundesliga player - and now goalscorer too - from the Faroes, a group of islands in the North Atlantic. The population of the Faroe Islands is around 50,000 – that is equivalent to twice the capacity of the Bielefeld stadium. Edmundsson’s case proves that you can achieve great things as a player from a very small country too. And he’s not alone in the history of the Bundesliga. We've unearthed a couple of similar cases. What do you think? Can Bielefeld stay in the league and what else surprise of an underdog do you expect this season? Let us know in the comments.
