The 'surreal' F1 rule change that's triggered a backlash

“Obscene”. “Surreal”. “Ridiculous”. It’s fair to say that Formula 1 teams and drivers are not happy with the FIA’s latest, and potentially very expensive, move.
That’s because the maximum fine that can be levied by the FIA stewards in Formula 1 has been quadrupled. Previously it was two hundred and fifty thousand Euros, but now it’s a cool million euros.
And it’s not just competitors in F1 that could be hit hard in the pocket thanks to this. The maximum in other FIA world championships is now three quarters of a million Euros, while in other FIA competitions it’s five hundred thousand.
The FIA’s justification is that the figures have not been reviewed or amended for the last 12 years at least. And, interestingly, it also says that this does not reflect the current needs of motorsport.
